After years of exploring dance and theatre from urban, classical and contemporary angles, Victor Quijada, Artistic Director/Choreographer, formed Rubberbandance Group in 2002. Presenting choreographic works that examine human relationships, this extraordinary collection of world-class dancers articulates the perfect marriage between explosive hip-hop physicality and the subtle profoundness of contemporary story telling. A combination of the narrative, the spectacular, and freedom of break dancing with the abstraction, nuances, and technique of contemporary dance results in a true hybrid of dance forms. Anne Plamondon joined the group in 2002 as a dancer and contributed highly to the growth and development of the company. She has been co-artistic director of RBDG since September 2005. Victor Quijada and Anne Plamondon will be the artists-in-residence at Place des Arts, Cinquième Salle in Montréal for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons.
The "crack" between Hyper-reality TV and the real thing, political surveillance and celebrity, is the theme of Rubberbandance Group’s new creation, Phase II, touring in 2009 . Is there a loss of time and self in our "virtual" universe? This three-part, 90-minute work by Victor Quijada answers with a contemporary dance work influenced by ballet and break, laced with A/V feeds, street demeanor and an ardor for violence and tenderness together. Collaborators include Yan Lee Chan (lighting), Mitchell Akiyama (music), Jasper Gahunia (a.k.a. DJ Lil' Jaz), Stephane Longpre (set design), Rene-Pierre Belanger (video design) and other multidisciplinary artists and videographers.
Elastic Perspective Redux is a collection of works created through commissions by hip hop dance and contemporary dance festivals in Canada, Europe, and the United States. The program is the result of a contemporary choreographic research that breaks the established conventions of hip hop. Victor Quijada creates a work that scrambles the aesthetic identity of hip hop, fusing it with theories that evolved in him due to his experiences in various dance forms. He has given rise to a hybrid style that emerges between the worlds of break and contemporary dance.
Since its inception, RBDG has been a sought after guest at both Hip Hop and Contemporary dance festivals throughout North America, Europe, and in Japan as a Canadian representative at EXPO 2005. A well-known member of the Montréal dance community and resident company of Usine C (2003-2004 and 2006-2007), Rubberbandance Group received acclaim for the innovative site-specific work "Slicing Static" (Best Dance Production of 2004 - Montréal Mirror), and is best known for “Elastic Perspective” which has been performed at Spoleto Festival USA (Charleston, SC), Ravinia Festival (Highland Park, IL), Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (Becket, MA), Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival (Seattle, WA), Bates Dance Festival (Lewiston, ME), Fall for Dance Festival at City Center (New York, NY), Breakin' Convention at Sadler's Wells (London), ACT Festival '04 at the Rotterdamse Schouwsberg (Holland), and URB Festivaali at Kiasma (Helsinki, Finland).
